My first job dealing with websites! I worked at the Observer as part of my co-op course during high school, and did some more work for them the following summer. When I first started, they set me up with a course load of tutorials in order to learn the framework they used for their website, WordPress. After completing all the tutorials, I then started working on the website. Since I was so new to WordPress, I never got into groundbreaking work, I stayed with uploading new stories every week and sorting their archived media. During the days when there were no stories to post (the stories were all posted on a single day), I would branch out and work in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. After seeing my desire to learn more and my at least basic grasp of graphic design software, they set me up with another tutorial course, this time on Illustrator. These skills have proved to be invaluable throughout both my education and professional career. The ability to quickly and efficiently edit photos, create designs and website assets, and of course WordPress have come up again and again, and getting an early start on these definitely gave me an edge over other applicants for some of my early jobs.
